Aug 10th - 13th, 2026

Three events in, and we’re still overwhelmed by the love and support this community continues to pour into Layover. It was so special to welcome new faces, reconnect with familiar ones, and spend four days together on the beautiful coast of Maine

Throughout the week, we stepped outside our usual routines and explored plein air painting with the talented Eric Jacobsen. From simplifying our compositions and working with limited palettes to seeing color more accurately and experimenting with expressive brushstrokes, each workshop challenged us to approach our work with a fresh perspective.

Beyond the easel, we dove into conversations around social media, brand identity, and building intentional creative businesses. And somewhere between the workshops, shared meals, and campfire chats, we found plenty of opportunities to slow down, exchange ideas, and connect with artists who just get it.

A huge thank you to Tops’l Farm for providing the dreamiest setting for our third Layover. We couldn't have imagined a more beautiful place to create, connect, and find inspiration in the in-between.

The Workshops

Workshop 1:

Introduction to Plein Air

Build a solid foundation and discover your unique “voice” as a painter. Each of Eric’s four workshops will build upon the last, beginning with the essentials of composition and value and working with a primary color palette, and gradually moving into expressive mark-making. You’ll learn how to simplify what you see, edit a scene to strengthen your composition, and lean into your painterly “handwriting”.

Workshop 2:

Seeing Color Accurately

Eric will walk you through a variety of color concepts and challenge your perception of color by focusing on things like values and shapes.

Workshop 3:

Making Your Mark

Discover how to make your mark with your work through varied sizes and shapes, exploring the use of tools like a palette knife or squeegee, playing with the amount of paint on your palette, and more.

Workshop 4:

Painting the Landscape with Expression

You’ll take everything that you’ve learned (and challenged) about Plein Air and go for it. With no client approval on the other side of your finished product, you’ll paint with complete freedom and uninhibited artistic expression.
